Distinguished Warfare Medal...
« on: February 19, 2013, 08:38:33 PM »
So what do you ex-military guys think of the new Distinguished Warfare Medal?

I've never served in combat, but I can see that any brave soul who has would consider the ranking of this award as deeply insulting.

Higher than the Bronze Star?  Sorry, no.
Yes, I'm a physician.  No, I'm not YOUR physician.  Nothing I say here is medical advice.

Do I treat Glocks like I treat my lawn mowers?  No, I treat them worse.  I treat my defensive weapons like my fire extinguishers and smoke detector - annual maintenance and I expect them to work when needed

I am unimpressed, to say the least.  Outranks the Purple Heart, need not be present to win?  I don't think so.

Given that there are already plenty of awards for actions not in a theater of combat, it's superfluous, something put there to make the drone jockeys feel good about themselves.

It should not outrank the Bronze Star (with or without V device), the Purple Heart, or, IMO, any award with a V device. (Yes, such things exist - I know of soldiers who have received an ARCOM with V device)

Had the folks at the Pentagon asked my opinion, I would have said that creating an "R" (for "rear") device for the Bronze Star would be a better solution than this new medal.

So, there I was, leaned back in my desk chair, remote viewing a 'technical' filled with YeeHawdis, when the blue screen of death appeared.  Damn!!!  Fatal error 44044!!!  Coolly, I slammed the battery backup into life, jammed the toggle full forward, and some other guy somewhere else did something or other.

It was damned close, I tells ya.  Damned close run thing.

Yeah, this is pretty stupid.

Or maybe "S" for "Support."

I once served in company that had a Presidential Unit Citation -- such being awarded to the unit, anyone assigned to the unit is entitled (expected and required, actually) to wear them -- for the Battle of the Atlantic in WWII.  They spent the war in Virginia.  It being a SIGINT unit, I'm guessing that Enigma, Huff Duff, and U-Boats were involved, but the full citation was classified.  Still.

And still:

How about a Bronze Star with REMF device?

I'm pretty sure that, were my suggestion implemented, most folks would use your terminology to refer to the R device.  ;)

Is that "rear" as in "ass?"   ;D

No, that is referred to as the "fourth point of contact."

Although that may be just an Army thing.

I think mike40-11 wins.
Bill- think Rear Echelon MoFo. Not knockin' those who'll wear the uniform, they're there of their own accord, but it just ain't the same as eating MREs and living in the dust and dirt.
