Indeed. As you might gather from the name of the band, the Decemberists are a bit left of center politically--supported the Obamanation, etc. The video is an official release, not a fan vid. I saw one description of the vid as "Peter Pan meets Mad Max". LOL!
I love some of the more-often-than-not braindead commentary:WTF! We don't get to see how it ends!?!?!
It could also symbolize overthrowing oppressive governments. I know some Ron Paul supporters get pumped over this song.
I read an interview in Rolling Stone where he said it was about a miner's union. It's socialist/communist propaganda through and through. In fact, Rolling Stone itself is socialist/communist propaganda. I've got to stop reading that trash.
Socialism is the future! Fuck the republic! We need anarchy to create a truly beatiful and all powerful world!
Why is Prince in this video?
Man, why didn't my childhood include dystopian war games set in a vast, parentless wilderness?
It might be just me, but this seems like it should be the anthem of the Occupy/Decolonize movement. Watching the video it just hit me really hard like, isn't it so representative of the idea of the underclass choosing to stand up and just refuse to take the shit those in charge are dealing anymore? And that those who used to be aligned with those in charge need to abandon that and stand with the oppressed?
I wholeheartedly agree with you. For me, it speaks of fighting against addiction. The awful chains of substance abuse has ravaged the lives of many I love. I want to slay it like I would a dragon of the hugest size. This song gives me hope. It makes me want to be strong. To be courageous in the face of evil and hopelessness. I *heart* this song.
This video fits the theme of the album. A sad by-product of war is children without parents because they died in battle, war started because of a ruler's lust for power. I liked the way it was put together, fighting without fighting, and they having a white flag is interesting, what better way to depose a king by simply not being his subject. Surrender the kingdom to him and leave it, a king isn't a king without people to rule.
This song speaks to me of the resilience of children. When I watch this, I see how children cope post-holocaust - rationing food and submitting to the occupying forces........Then rising up to be triumphant.....
man you are soooooo mistaken! Humans have been on this planet a million years
all that time- with NO WARS! war came in with civilization
as long as we were hunter- gatherers our lives depended on sharing
and keeping the peace.
Okay so there was a disaster so martial law was put into action making the president into an all powerfull dictatior treated the people like shit till they finally acted and drove out this tyranical govrernment. but only when their belly's went hungry did a revolution start. : (
This song and this video are fucking stupid. Every one of these dumb asses will be murdered at the apocalypse. And, they sing like a bunch of pussies. Lame!
Here's a 2006 vid by The Decemberists "16 Military Wives"...same director...Colin Meloy featured in this one.http://www.youtube.com/v/E7fzUGR8ZH4
