Gasoline shortage
« on: November 12, 2012, 08:22:03 PM »
We live about 175 miles north on NYC.  Tonight, our son went to buy gasoline for his wife's car and had to go to three different stations to find one that still had fuel.  The explanation they gave is that all the fuel upstate is being shipped to the city because they have a shortage.

Is Cuomo making the same noises about the free market price gouging as Christie in NJ?

If not, and I was a distributor, and I could get $6-7/gal in the NYC area vs $4-5 upstate, well, I know where I'd be sending my gas.

Exactly. Arbitrary rationing in a disaster area just allocates misery by keeping supply fixed. The price mechanism redirects new supply to the area. Nearby areas might suffer a little, but they weren't whacked by the disaster. Rationing, conversely, retains all suffering in that area.

The problem with the price mechanism is that it doesn't guarantee full employment for professional bureaucrats. To some that is a major failure. To others, a real bonus.  ;)

FWIW, I didn't see any stations without gas, and the price for unleaded regular was running $4.00/gal, +/- $0.20, depending on borough/neighborhood.  Did see many tanker trucks heading into the city.

Oh, yeah, I'm home.
