Joys of living in an agricultural community
« on: October 23, 2012, 07:21:32 PM »
Just saw an ad on Craigslist, fresh raw walnuts in shell:
$1 per pound.
I gave the guy ten bucks.  It filled a 5 gallon bucket 2/3 full.

Yum!

Walnuts, yes indeed.
College days in Oregon, my roommate and I would 'visit' the walnut grove, and carry back gallons of walnuts.
We rearranged the heating system in our room so that we could dry the nuts before consuming them.
Good fun, good exercise, good nutrition, poor morals, what can I say!

I've been whining for months that nuts, while great protein, are more expensive than beef.  I guess I just needed to look in the right place.

I've often wondered about asking local growers if I can glean from their fields after harvest.

If I remember my history correctly, chestnuts were the old fashioned equivalent of food stamps.  ;D

Lots and lots of things can be made with the right nuts.
