instead of ringing, you can drive copper nails into the trunk, if you can find copper nails.
copper sulfate also works..it's sold as sewer root remover.
drill a hole using a cordless drill and a 1" paddle bit at an angle in as far as you can, and fill the hole with the crystal root remover..works best in early spring, just before the sap starts to rise..the copper kills the tree, and standing dead wood dries much faster than downed wood.
again, as paul emphasized, use the appropriate safety gear...goggles and gloves in this case.
