Heart healthy bread

At the time of my last heart attack, before being released from the Rochester hospital, all heart patients were required to attend a seminar during which the attending physicians emphasized time and again that we needed to included a substantial quantity of flax flour in our daily diet.  They suggested that we use something like a sugar shaker to sprinkle the flour on on, or in, everything we ate.  That idea did not work out very well, but since then I have come up with a recipe that puts more than two full cups of flax flour into my weekly diet.  Depending on the machine you use and personal taste, you may need to play around with the recipe a bit but if you try it, I think you will discover why it has become my "turn-to" snack food of choice..    

                      Heart Healthy Bread

2 Cups Whole wheat flour
1 Cup Unbleached All Purpose Flour
1 Cup Flax Flour
1 Cup Oat Bran
1 1/2 Teaspoons Salt
1 3/4 Tablespoons Dried Milk
1 1/2 Tablespoons Real Butter
2  Tablespoons Molasses
1 1/2 Cups Cold water to start *

  * As the dough starts to mix, a little at a time, I add roughly another quarter cup of water or just enough to make the dough ball up correctly.

The settings i use on our Panasonic Bread machine are:
 Bake
 Medium size loaf
 Light crust

So why are they pushing flax? Wouldn't you be better off just stopping with the bread completely?

We were told that flax flour reduces the LDL or bad cholesterol along with the triglycerides and that it also helps lower blood pressure while having no effect on the level of HDL or "good" cholesterol.  The hospital did not recommend that we use it to make bread.  That is something I came up with as a more palatable method of incorporating the flour into my diet.

That bread looks delicious....like I should have a piece toasted with strawberry jam!   I have been making granola bars that have flax seed in them for the very reasons you stated....I'm printing off this recipe to try it...hope mine turns out as good as yours looks!
