Online Topo Maps
« on: December 26, 2011, 05:40:32 PM »
While I was wandering around the 'Net today, I found a free online source of USGS 1:24K downloadable topo maps:  TopoQuest.com.  The site has coverage of most of the US and Canada in the following scales:

  • 1:24K USGS topographic maps (United States)
  • 1:100K USGS topographic maps (United States)
  • 1:250K USGS topographic maps (United States)
  • 1m satellite/aerial imagery (United States and Canada)
  • Canadian 1:50K topographic maps

(I wasn't sure in what category this belonged; camping seemed the best fit.)
American parachutists...devils in baggy pants...are less than 100 meters from my outpost line. I can't sleep at night; they pop up from nowhere and we never know when or how they will strike next. Seems like the black-hearted devils are everywhere....

This can be a useful one as well, especially if you want older maps:

I've used it to check older maps on properties for locations of old pasture areas that had grown over. There are sometimes satellite pics there. It is interesting that some maps for some years will show creeks that other maps don't. I'd try and scarf all of the ones of interest.

We've ordered these in the past, they're well worth your money.  But if you're going to someplace well traveled, I highly recommend the updates by NatGeo -Trails Illustrated and Recreation Maps.
